A birthday note: why I am starting Maria the HR

On my birthday, I am starting MariaTheHR.com as a space to share practical reflections on HR, fairness, documentation, and the changing world of work in Ontario.

Today is December 2, 2025. It is my birthday, and it feels like the right day to begin something I have been thinking about for a long time: writing about HR in a practical, positive, and human way.

MariaTheHR.com will be where I share what I am learning as I continue to grow in the world of HR, especially through the lens of Canadian and Ontario workplaces.

HR is not just about policies or paperwork. It is about people, fairness, documentation, compliance, communication, and judgment. The best HR work often happens quietly: helping managers make better decisions, supporting employees through change, improving processes, and creating more consistent workplace experiences.

Why I am starting this blog

Over my career, I have had the opportunity to work across recruitment, onboarding, HR operations, employee relations, workforce planning, accommodations, performance management, HR systems, and workplace compliance.

Each part of HR has taught me something different.

  • Recruitment taught me that the employee experience starts before day one.
  • Onboarding taught me that clarity builds confidence.
  • Employee relations taught me that fairness needs both empathy and structure.
  • HR operations taught me that strong processes reduce confusion.
  • Documentation taught me that good records protect consistency.
  • HR data taught me that better information supports better decisions.

In Ontario, HR professionals are navigating many important workplace conversations: employment standards, human rights, health and safety, inclusion, hybrid work, employee wellbeing, and organizational change. [1] [2] [3]

That is what I want this blog to explore.

What HR has taught me so far

The biggest lesson I have learned is that HR sits between care and accountability.

Care matters because people deserve to be treated with dignity. Accountability matters because workplaces need standards, consistency, and trust.

Good HR is not about choosing one over the other. It is about helping organizations apply both in a fair and practical way.

What I am excited about

I am excited about the future of HR operations, employee relations, and HR technology.

Not technology for the sake of technology, but practical tools that help HR teams work better: cleaner onboarding, stronger documentation, better case tracking, useful workforce reporting, and responsible AI that supports human judgment instead of replacing it.

HR is becoming more strategic, more data-informed, and more connected to business decisions. At the same time, the heart of HR remains the same: people, fairness, communication, and trust.
